The “Public Policies for Extractivist Reserves in the Amazon”  project was elaborated to support actions of the National Council of Extractivist Populations (Conselho Nacional das Populações Extrativistas – CNS -) together with federal and state level public institutions seeking to broaden and consolidate the initiatives of this organization and those of its representatives in the elaboration and execution of policies which benefit Extractive Reserve communities.

Two events have been central to put this process into context: the first “Call of the Forest” meet organized by CNS, with support from Memorial Chico Mendes (MCM), on the Terra Grande Pracuúba Extractive Reserve on the island of Marajó, State of Pará, on the 5th and 6th of August, 2011; the second was the “III National Congress of Extractivist Populations” held in Macapá, state of Amapá, between the 5th and 9th of November, 2012.

The two events oversaw the participation of more than 300 leaderships from all states of the Amazon. In 2013, the second “Call of the Forest” took place on the 28th and 29th of November on the Gurupá Melgaço Extractive Reserve, in the town of Melgaço, in the State of Pará. As a result the Plan for Support to Extractivism was formalized by the federal government.

The documents approved in the first and second “Call of the Forest” and in the National CNS Congress constitute the platform on which this project was elaborated and which is now being executed by Memorial Chico Mendes.

This project has been supported by the Ford Foundation since 2012.
